A body found in Yonkers early Monday morning had been placed in a shopping cart and apparently set on fire, police said.

“While it is unsure at this time where this incident occurred, because of the location this body was found, the Yonkers Police Department is the primary investigative agency,” Detective Sergeant Frank DiDomizio said in an email Monday afternoon. Detectives “were on scene all morning processing evidence in the preliminary stages of this investigation.”

Just before 2 a.m. Monday, police responded to the Oak Street bridge area on a report of a body found, near the border with Mount Vernon, DiDomizio wrote. The call originated as a fire and, after putting out the flames, Westchester County police and the Mount Vernon Fire Department reported a lifeless body on the sidewalk, he said.

DiDomizio stated that “it has been prematurely reported by the media that this victim was ‘dismembered,’ however, these details regarding the body cannot be determined at this time, due to the fire.”

Yonkers detectives are working with the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s office, which will make that determination and the cause of death and any additional injuries to the victim.
