The Sunman-Dearborn School Board last night approved the hiring of Michael Johnson as varsity baseball coach at East Central HS. Johnson has more than 20 years coaching experience, including over 10 years on the Trojan baseball coaching staff. He succeeds Bobby Reynolds, who stepped down in June after 22 years at the helm. Johnson teaches 6th grade science at East Central Middle School.
The Reds scored seven runs in the top of the 10th inning to beat the Marlins 10-4 in Miami last night. It’s the first time the Reds scored seven runs in an extra inning since they plated seven in the 11th inning on June 13, 1985 against the Atlanta Braves. Reds starter Hunter Greene had a no-decision, but extended his scoreless innings streak to 24 before it came to an end in the Marlins three-run 4th inning. It’s the longest such streak by a Reds starter since Tom Browning’s 25-inning scoreless streak that ran from June 6-25 1989. Also part of the historic night, manager David Bell was ejected in the 7th inning for the 31st time in his career. Bell surpasses Sparky Anderson for the franchise record. The Reds took three out of four games in the Miami series and now head to Milwaukee, where they will go up against the National League Central Division-leading Brewers in a three-game weekend series. Bengals WR Charlie Jones was taken off the field on a cart yesterday at the team’s practice on the new turf inside Paycor Stadium. The 2nd year man out of Purdue suffered a knee injury but was able to walk around the locker room after practice without crutches. The team also announced on social media yesterday that they will wear their all-white uniform and helmet combination in the Week 9 home game on October 27 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Cincinnati is 4-0 in that combo since rolling it out in 2022.
The Bengals open preseason play tomorrow night at home against Tampa Bay, while the Colts take on Denver Sunday afternoon.
Golf Hall of Famer Chi Chi Rodriguez died Thursday. A native of Puerto Rico, Rodriguez won more than 30 PGA and Champions tour events, and played on the victorious USA Ryder Cup team in 1973. He was also one of the sport’s most popular players, and was known for twirling his club and making it look he was wielding a sword after making a putt. Chi Chi Rodriquez was 88.
