William Floyd High School Business Academy Featured on LI News Radio

William Floyd High School Business Academy chairperson Ms. Jacqueline Giacalone was recently featured on “Spotlight on LI Schools,” the weekly LI News Radio program highlighting the great things happening in Long Island’s schools. Ms. Giacalone discussed the various Business Academy opportunities that students have available to them at William Floyd High School, which will help them in their future post-graduation journeys and throughout their lives.

The program, sponsored by the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association (N-SSBA), features host Robert Vecchio, executive director of the N-SSBA and former William Floyd Board of Education trustee and president. During the interview, Ms. Giacalone and Mr. Vecchio discussed the Business Academy’s offerings, which are designed to provide a variety of options for students to meet elective requirements while developing college- and career-related skills that will be beneficial to them in their future endeavors.

During the interview, Mr. Vecchio asked for the top piece of advice for parents as their children enter their freshman and sophomore years of high school at William Floyd.

Ms. Giacalone’s response: “Start with Personal Finance – that is the most important class,” she said, adding how oftentimes she has heard parents state that they wish their children had the opportunity to learn how to manage money effectively and responsibly. Personal Finance covers topics such as balancing a checkbook, writing checks, savings accounts, insurance, investing and much more.

In addition to Personal Finance, other William Floyd High School Business Academy courses include: College & Career Prep, Accounting, College Accounting, Business of Music, Business Ownership & Management, College Business Law, College Business Math, Entertainment Marketing, Everyday Law, Fashion Marketing, International Business (English & Spanish), Leadership by Design, Math Applications, The Office, Real Estate Reality, Social Media, Sports Marketing, Video Game Design, Virtual Enterprise, Wall Street, Wealth Management, and Web Design.

College credit is also available for numerous courses and there are three graduation pathways in the Business Academy – Accounting, Small Business Management and Microsoft Office Specialist.
