In the wake of Amazon’s decision to mandate a full-time return to the office, Google employees have raised concerns about whether their company might follow suit. At a recent town hall meeting, dubbed “TGIF” (Thank God It’s Friday), the most-asked question from employees centred around whether Google would continue its hybrid work model. According to a Business Insider report, Google executives have reassured employees that the company will stick to its current three-day-a-week in-office policy, despite growing fears that it might adopt Amazon’s stricter approach.

Google Reaffirms Hybrid Model

During the town hall meeting, Google’s Vice President of Global Compensation and Benefits, John Casey, addressed employees’ concerns directly. He confirmed that Google remains committed to its hybrid work model, which requires employees to work in the office three days a week. Casey emphasised that the company believes this model provides the right balance between flexibility and productivity, allowing employees to work effectively from both the office and home.

CEO Sundar Pichai’s Take

Google CEO Sundar Pichai also weighed in, reinforcing the company’s stance. He highlighted the importance of productivity when working from home, adding that maintaining this balance is key to continuing Google’s flexible work arrangements. Pichai acknowledged that some employees, particularly those in hardware teams, have been asked to return to the office for four days a week, but for the majority, the three-day requirement remains in place.

Stricter Enforcement of Office Policy

While Google is committed to hybrid work, it has reportedly become stricter about enforcing its three-day rule. Employees who don’t meet this average are now receiving reminders. In addition, some Google offices have introduced new workspace concepts like “neighborhoods,” featuring moveable desks and modular meeting rooms, aimed at fostering collaboration in the hybrid environment.

For now, Google’s hybrid model is here to stay, offering employees more flexibility compared to Amazon’s full return-to-office mandate.
