San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Thousand Oaks are home to California companies with the state’s best pay and/or work environments, according to a U.S. News & World Report study.
Healthcare, information technology, and pharmaceutical companies did well in the news organization’s report, which ranked the workplaces from 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score for pay, balance of life and work, comfort, sense of belonging, professional development, and stability.
Other high-ranking companies included the In-N-Out hamburger chain and Trader Joe’s grocery stores.
California companies with high scores
Many companies scored well for both their pay and work environment:
- Aya Healthcare. The San Diego company scored 5 in all the categories except stability, where it scored a 4.
- Box. The Redwood City information technology and software category scored 5s in all categories except for a 2 in professional development.Â
- Calix. The San Jose information technology and software company got 5s in all categories except for a 4 for professional development.Â
- Cadence. The San Jose semiconductors, electronics, and equipment company got 5s for quality of pay, work-life balance, stability, and comfort.
- Five9. The San Ramon software and information technology company received 5s for categories such as pay and work-life balance.
- GoPro. The San Mateo company, whose products include cameras, scored 5s for pay, work-life balance and a sense of belonging.
- Guidewire. The San Mateo information technology and software business earned 5s for pay, stability, work-life balance, sense of belonging and professional development.
- In-N-Out Burger. The Irvine-based fast-food chain got 5s for pay, stability, and comfort. And it’s popular with various consumers, including movie star Jamie Lee Curtis, who sneaked out of the Oscars to go to In-N-Out. See the video attached to this story.

- Nvidia. The Santa Clara semiconductors, electronics, and equipment company scored 5s for pay, work-life balance, stability, comfort, and a sense of belonging.
