LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer delivered her annual State of the State Address during a joint-session of the state legislature Wednesday night.
Whitmer discussed several topics, including the economy, housing, education and fixing Michigan roads.
Much of Whitmer’s speech focused on navigating political division. The governor told the crowd that she’s willing to work with Republicans to bring down costs.
While Whitmer said she isn’t against tariffs, she believes many of the tariffs proposed by President Donald Trump could do harm to our economy.
“Let’s keep speaking with one voice for smart trade policies to level the playing field and secure American jobs without jacking up costs,” Whitmer said.
Whitmer also spoke about fixing Michigan roads, which has been a major focus during her time in office.
“We need a sustainable, long-term solution for local roads,” Whitmer said. “Every pothole is a reminder that we must act now.”
Before the end of her speech, Whitmer asked for lawmakers to work across party lines, despite political differences.
“At a dark moment when bullying and lying seem to be in style, let’s be intentional about putting out light,” Whitmer said. “Let’s welcome challenges, embrace our differences, and work together to get things done.”
However, it could be difficult for Whitmer follow through on items she wants to get done. Her party no longer has the majority in both chambers at the state capital.
After November’s election, Democrats kept control in the state Senate, but Republicans won the majority in the House of Representatives.
