‘What the cluck!’: Doughnut shop abruptly closes two Charlotte-area stores

Must read

On the heels of one Charlotte doughnut shop announcing it will close, another has abruptly shuttered two area locations.

Duck Donuts has closed its shops in both Charlotte’s Dilworth neighborhood and Huntersville’s Rosedale Shopping Center.

“As of Sunday, October 13, our Charlotte location is currently closed until further notice. Thank you to all of our guests who have supported the shop over the years and the sweet memories. We apologize for any inconvenience and we hope to see you at one of our other locations soon,” Duck Donuts posted on Facebook on Oct. 14.

A message with the same wording was posted on the same day regarding its Huntersville location.

Both locations have leases available for sale on Wesellrestauraunts.com, according to Charlotte Business Journal, who was the first to break the news.

NOT ANOTHER ONE: Just two days after Duck’s announcement, Pepperbox Doughnuts announced it would close its only remaining location in South End. Pepperbox also closed its NoDa location in May.

Duck Donuts, the Outer Banks chain, began franchising in 2013.

Duck Donuts, a NC-born favorite

ABOUT DUCK DONUTS: Born in (and named after) the quaint town in the Outer Banks, Duck Donuts features warm, made-to-order doughnuts. Customers choose icing, topping and drizzle, and then watch as the doughnuts go down the assembly line and get made in front of them.

“We hope we were able to add just a little joy to your life throughout the years,” stated a sign on the Dilworth location’s door, posted by a customer.

  • “Come back! The Duck Donuts in Duck, NC is too far away!” customer Michelle Scull Benson posted on the Huntersville location’s announcement.

  • “I loved that place. I drove from Columbia just to get donuts. They told me the Columbia was getting Duck Donuts. I got there at 5:00am and was the first one in the door,” Cathy Monts wrote on the Charlotte location’s post.

  • “WHAT THE CLUCK!!!!” wrote Kevin McQueen as he shared the post.

Google maps lists both locations as “temporarily closed”. Locations in South Charlotte and Fort Mill remain open, according to the Duck Donuts website.
