After going 37-35 over six years in charge, Neal Brown will not return to coach the West Virginia Mountaineers in 2025. Baker already made one splashy hire during his tenure as West Virginia AD, hiring Darian DeVries away from Drake to take over as the West Virginia basketball head coach. Will Baker be able to attract another accomplished candidate at the end of the West Virginia football coaching search?

Top West Virginia football coach candidates

One name the staff has identified as a potential target is Jacksonville State head coach Rich Rodriguez. The 61-year-old has piled up 190 wins during his head coaching career, including 60 victories during a seven-year span in Morgantown from 2001-2007. Rodriguez led the Mountaineers to 10 wins or more in three consecutive seasons, leading the program to BCS bowls in 2005 and 2007 before leaving for Michigan.

Rodriguez was fired after three lackluster seasons in Ann Arbor, but led Arizona to a New Year’s Day bowl in 2014. Now, he’s the head coach at Jacksonville State, where he helped successfully guide the Gamecocks from the FCS to FBS. Jacksonville State reached nine wins for a third consecutive season with a dominant victory in the Conference USA Championship Game. He certainly understands the stakes at West Virginia and is reportedly scheduled to interview for the vacancy soon. See more candidates at EerSports.
