BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – Back to school shopping has changed a lot in the past few years, with the rise of online school supply lists and essential prices increasing, families and teachers are feeling the financial burden
School supplies are changing, as curriculums change to focus more on virtual resources.
Today, electronic work submissions can help save on the cost of easily depleted supplies. Whereas in the past, students and teachers often had to buy extra paper and pencils multiple times a year.
As traditional supply prices inflate, so does the price for electronic amenities like laptops and many families find back-to-school shopping to be a financial burden. This burden can trickle down and affect other staff in the district, like teachers.
Even in 2006, fourth grade teacher Heather Busuelman told WBKO she spends, “With school supplies and of course the bulletin boards and stuff like that… I’d say about two hundred dollars… a year.”
Today, public and private schools work to create resource centers that use grants and donations to try and fill the gap for students and teachers who may be needing extra supplies.
Sarah Lockwood, the Finical resource coordinator for Allen County Schools encourages those in need of financial assistance with school supplies to contact their school’s resource center
“Sometimes breaking that barrier of calling the school and asking for help can be hard but know that the people in these positions are doing this because they care… because they’ve been there… because they understand that struggle of needing. ” said Lockwood.
