At least six people were killed and 78 were injured after a shopping mall’s roof collapsed on Friday night in Peru.
The Real Plaza Trujillo shopping mall food court’s heavy iron collapsed on people, who were enjoying their days.
Several videos are being circulated on social media showing the CCTV footage of the mall which captured the moment when the roof collapsed on people, crushing shoppers’ happiness.
During a Saturday news conference, defence minister Walter Astudillo confirmed that five individuals died at the scene, whilst one person succumbed to injuries at hospital. He reported that 30 people had been released after treatment, whilst 48 remained in hospital care, with three in critical condition. The minister extended his sympathies to the bereaved families, AP news reported.
The local fire department chief, Luis Roncal, stated that despite thorough searches with rescue dogs, they found no signs of life. However, he confirmed that search operations would persist.
In response to the incident, Trujillo’s mayor, Mario Reyna, ordered the immediate closure of the shopping centre, citing imminent risk. He also announced plans to conduct inspections of other shopping centres in the area.
