Walmart rolls out Caroline’s Carts for inclusive shopping

Must read

US multinational retailer Walmart has introduced Caroline’s Carts across its stores in multiple states to offer an inclusive and accessible shopping experience.

The specialised carts assist caregivers of children and adults with disabilities and people with limited mobility or injuries to navigate all Walmart stores.

With a seating capacity ranging from 35lb to 250lb, the carts are a practical solution for a range of needs.

Walmart’s plan includes equipping all Supercenters with at least two Caroline’s Carts and ensuring each Neighbourhood Market has one.

The rollout will see 8,000 carts distributed nationwide, with full implementation expected by early 2025.

The order surpasses the total number of Caroline’s Carts ordered since their inception in 2012.

Caroline’s Carts are now available in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Walmart store operations executive vice-president Cedric Clark said: “Helping our customers save money and live better is more than our mission – it’s our driving force.

“Equipping our stores with Caroline’s Carts provides some relief to parents and caregivers who need this tool and know it’s available at their Walmart. Whether they’re caring for someone with a disability or a temporary injury, the carts support our customers when and how they need it every time they come through our doors.”

Following the success of 2023’s sensory-friendly hours, initially intended for the back-to-school season, Walmart has made these hours a permanent feature.

From 8am to 10am daily, participating stores across the US and Puerto Rico provide a calmer shopping environment by turning off radios, setting TV monitors to still screens and dimming lights where possible.

In July 2024, Walmart Canada also initiated sensory-friendly shopping hours across its stores nationwide, aiming to foster a more inclusive environment.
