Walmart partners with Agritask to pilot data-driven technology

Must read

US retailer Walmart has entered a strategic partnership with Agritask, a company specialising in crop supply intelligence, to enhance its produce-sourcing decisions.

The collaboration will pilot a technology solution under Walmart Global Tech’s Sparkubate programme, aimed at empowering sourcing managers with better information on seasonal fruit crop yields, including cherries and blackberries.

The initiative with Agritask is designed to ensure a reliable supply, minimise food waste and provide fresh produce to customers.

Depending on the outcomes of the pilot, Walmart may expand the use of Agritask’s solutions and insights for a subsequent season.

The pilot will utilise Agritask’s advanced remote sensing and data analytics tools across selected regions in the US and Mexico.

This will deliver real-time, hyperlocal insights on seasonal blackberry and cherry crops from Walmart suppliers.

These particular crops are selected based on their sensitivity to environmental factors, which can greatly impact their growth and shelf life.

Agritask CEO Ofir Ardon said: “We are thrilled to have Walmart become the first retail partner to integrate Yield Intelligence, adopting our data-driven innovation built on 15 years of optimising agricultural supply chains to reshape how enterprises collaborate with suppliers.

“Together, we are uniquely positioned to implement scalable, climate-smart and risk-ready solutions that optimise sourcing from the ground up.”

The latest venture is part of Walmart’s ongoing efforts to use technology to create a sustainable and resilient supply chain.

The company has already established partnerships such as its 3D weaving technology pilot with unspun and its carbon capture pilot with Rubi Laboratory, to innovate and address supply chain challenges.

Walmart sourcing innovation and surety of supply vice-president Kyle Carlyle said:  “Teaming up with Agritask enables Walmart to delve into more streamlined and sustainable sourcing practices, ensuring we consistently deliver fresh, high-quality products to meet customer demand.”
