Voters to decide on infrastructure surtax renewal

Must read

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – If you vote in Bay County’s General Election, you’ll decide whether to renew a half-penny sales tax for infrastructure.

The half-penny sales tax started in 2016, and if voters approve, the surtax will continue for 10 years.

Patrick Chapin, president and CEO of the Bay County Chamber of Commerce, said nearly half of the money raised from it comes from visitors.

Chapin invites you to look at BayHalfCent.Com to see the projects done as a result.

He said the money cannot be placed in the county’s general fund and an oversight committee is there to make sure it goes only to infrastructure, with other resident benefits.

“We’re able to keep our property taxes down. We’re able to have revenue generated by, half of it by our visitors and we’re able to take that money and leverage it even more,” he explained.

If you want to learn more, you’re also invited to attend Chamber Chat this Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at Bay County Chamber of Commerce, where the County Manager will be there to answer questions.
