Volunteers from across Chautauqua County battled the elements of rain, wind and humidity in raising funds for The Resource Center on Wednesday.
During the annual Special Edition sale of The Post-Journal and Dunkirk OBSERVER, more than $4,300 was raised. Sellers could be found near Tim Hortons in the Jamestown area while the north county was just as busy. Tim Hortons hosted volunteers in Dunkirk, Fredonia, Cassadaga and Irving.
In addition, athletes from the Fredonia Central Schools were stationed at Water and Main streets selling copies of the OBSERVER. Other familiar faces during the sale included state Sen. George Borrello, who was selling near his hometown in Silver Creek, and county Sheriff James Quattrone.
For the OBSERVER, the sale marked the 23rd year of the special edition that was started in 2002 to benefit research for ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis — commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The Resource Center and Laurel Run took on the sale in 2006.
The Laurel Memorial Run & Walk is a celebration of the potential that exists within people who have disabilities. The Laurel Memorial Run/Walk takes place next weekend, July 19 and 20. The first day features a Jamestown-to-Dunkirk relay run, while day two includes a number of walking and running events in the Hotellings’ hometown of Silver Creek.
