Vikings players Cameron Bynum and Joshua Metellus stepped into the spotlight with an impressive nod to a classic 90s pop culture moment this past weekend in the first London game of the 2024 NFL season.
After intercepting a pass from Aaron Rodgers against the New York Jets in the first quarter of the game, Bynum found Metellus and the two recreated the memorable secret handshake from “The Parent Trap.”
“We’re on a generational celebration run right now,” Bynum told reporters after the game. “Three weeks in a row we’ve had some fire celebrations, but this one might be one of my favorites because that’s one of my favorite movies, and it’s based in London.”
Bynum said during the presser that he watched the movie last week and knew that he had to have something ready to go for the international game just in case.
“I watched that movie last week, and said, ‘This is it,'” Bynum explained.
The two players reenacted a handshake done in the movie, which starred Lindsay Lohan as two twins unknowingly separated by their parents’ divorce. The twins accidentally meet at summer camp and hatch a plan to get their estranged parents back together. The scene in question comes when Annie, one of the twins, returns home from camp and is greeted by the family butler, Martin (Simon Kunz) with an elaborate handshake.
Some of the Vikings’ players were mic’d up on the sidelines during the game in London, revealing a conversation Bynum had with Metellus.
“It was smooth,” Metellus said to Bynum.
“It was aight,” replied Bynum. “It’s still gonna go viral.”
Bynum posted a video on Instagram after the game that revealed the two players had practiced the celebration leading up to the matchup, showing a side-by-side comparison with the movie and nailing every component of the scene.
Lohan even showed her support for the players’ handshake homage, commenting two hearts on Bynum’s post.
“you changed the world with this movie,” Bynum responded in the comments.
Metellus also posted about the handshake, captioning the video “90s babies,” with a crying laughing emoji on X.
Many fans took to the comments of the Instagram post by the NFL to show their love for the celebration.
“Top tier celebration for the 90’s generation,” one fan wrote.
“Nobody better at the celly’s this year,” praised another.
