Vanderbilt School seeking $2.4 million for safety, infrastructure upgrades

Must read

Vanderbilt Area School is seeking $2.4 million for school safety and facility upgrades.

The funding would go towards replacing some doors and windows, adding security film on others and installing fob readers on exterior doors. It would also cover the replacement of aging boilers and other HVAC equipment.

Vanderbilt superintendent David Harwood says that the funding would allow the school to better support students and community members alike.

“This is a main hub, not just for the school-age kids — for preschool through 12th grade — but for the community too,” he said. “Vanderbilt Area Schools is a main focus in the community. We have an adult education program going in now, so we’re trying to improve the whole community.”

The proposal also focuses on the cafeteria and replacing kitchen equipment, along with revitalizing the school’s wood shop.

The funding would also go towards replacing damaged siding on the school and bus garage.

The proposal would levy 1.2 mills if approved, or $10 a month for a house with a taxable value of $100,000.

Voters will have through election day on Nov. 5 to weigh in on the proposal. Absentee voting begins on Sep. 26, while in-person early voting will begin by Oct. 26. More information on voting can be found with the Michigan Secretary of State.
