USF’s overall status among public and private universities dipped in this year’s U.S. News and World Report best college rankings

Last year, USF claimed the No. 89 position, but decreased to No. 91 this time around.

Still, the university maintained its status as a top 50 public university, coming in at No. 45.

“[USF’s] sustained success as a top 50 public university underscores the strong return on investment that a degree from our institution provides to our students and the impact we are making on the Tampa Bay region, our state and beyond,” USF president Rhea Law said in a Tuesday press release.

This is the sixth consecutive year that USF is ranked in the top 50 among all public universities, according to a universitywide email sent Tuesday by Provost Prasant Mohapatra.

The university’s highest ranking among public universities was at No. 42 in 2022. USF dropped three spots last year, bringing it to No. 45, where it stayed this year.

Mohapatra noted in the email that USF has risen 39 spots in the ranking among public universities and 65 spots among all universities over the past 10 years.

U.S. News & World Report also ranked USF as “best value” among all universities in Florida for the second consecutive year.

Washington Monthly ranked USF at No. 22 among public universities last month, and Forbes at No. 41, which is up 22 spots from the previous year.

Mohapatra said the factors considered for the Best Colleges ranking are aligned with USF’s strategic plan.

USF’s strategic plan includes goals to lead USF to milestones such as achieving a Top-25 U.S. News & World Report public research university ranking.

“USF’s sustained success and strong national reputation would not be possible without you — our high-achieving students, world-class faculty and dedicated staff,” Mohapatra wrote in the email.
