Up to Seven Business Days: New Trash Pickup Fees and Change in Overflow Policy proposed by Mayor Flaggs

Must read

VICKSBURG, MS. – In a press release this morning, the Mayor announced a proposed increase to garbage collection fees for both residents and commercial businesses in Vicksburg. Changes to how overflow, limbs, and debris are handled were also addressed.

Earlier this month, the Mayor, in a press release regarding the budget hearing held on August 6, implied that there will be a recommendation made for residents to cover half of the cost of residential trash pickup

Today, the Mayor announced that Waste Management now charges for the pickup of limbs and debris, which was previously included in the service. The city will now take responsibility for the additional service. However, Mayor Flaggs stated that residents must call the Action Line at 601-636-3411 to report a pick up, and the city will then pick up the overflow, debris, and limbs in up to seven business days.

Rate Changes

The Mayor will recommend to the Board of Aldermen that monthly trash collection fees for residential services increase from $16.50 to $21. The fee will continue to cover the twice-weekly pick up for trash in the green bins marked with the city seal. Residents can purchase an additional trash can for an additional fee of $25.50; these additional cans will be brown.

Small businesses outside of downtown will use the green trash cans provided by the city and may
purchase additional brown bins at a rate of $25.50 per month per bin.

For commercial businesses in downtown Vicksburg, the fee for garbage collection will be $40.15 per
bin per month, with services provided four times a week. Businesses may opt for up to four bins at this
rate.

“We understand that changes to our garbage collection services can be challenging. The increase in fees and the new responsibility for debris pickup are necessary adjustments to ensure we maintain a high level of service,” said Mayor Flaggs, “We are committed to providing effective waste management and appreciate the community’s understanding and cooperation during this transition.”

If residents need an additional trash can or require a replacement, please contact the Water and Gas
Department at 601-636-3414.
