Recently, on a Friday morning, Delta experienced a setback due to a technological glitch caused by an external vendor, leading to a temporary halt in our flights while our systems were down.

This interruption led to the cancellation of over 3,500 flights involving Delta and Delta Connection until Saturday, with disruptions extending into Sunday as our teams endeavored to restore our systems and resume normal operations. At Delta, canceling flights is a measure of last resort, one we consider very seriously.

This technological hiccup occurred during one of the busiest travel weekends of the summer, with our flights nearly fully booked, which complicated efforts to arrange alternative travel for affected passengers. I extend my deepest apologies to all who were affected by this disruption. Delta’s commitment is to bridge global distances, and we recognize the strain caused when travel plans are unexpectedly altered.

Rest assured, Delta’s team—comprising the finest professionals in the industry—has been working tirelessly to ensure your safe and timely travel and to reinstate the dependable service you expect from us.

The issue specifically pertained to the Microsoft Windows operating system, which supports many of Delta’s applications, including a crucial crew tracking tool. This tool struggled to handle the sudden influx of changes due to the system’s downtime. Our teams have been working nonstop to address these challenges and restore full functionality.

In response, we have issued a travel waiver allowing changes to itineraries without any fees, to provide you with added flexibility. For those whose flights were canceled, we are also offering meal vouchers, hotel accommodations, and transport where necessary. In addition, affected customers will receive Delta SkyMiles and travel vouchers as an expression of our regret.
