ORONO – Orono High School has been named Minnesota’s best public high school in 2018 by U.S. News & World Report.
The high school placed second overall in the state.
“Our graduates attend the nation’s top colleges and universities and frequently tell us how well prepared they were for a rigorous college experinece,” said Superintendent Karen Orcutt. “At the same time, this ranking also validates our many efforts to help every student achieve his or her potential.”
On a national scale, U.S. News & World Report said Orono was 210 out of 28,813, or among the top 1 percent. The high school placed first in Minnesota for its STEM education.
The three steps to determine a high school’s placing are:
- Seeing if the schools perform well on state proficiency tests.
- Assessing whether historically underserved students performed at or better than state average for historically underserved students.
- Meeting a benchmark graduation rate.
The top 2 percent of high schools across the country are recognized with a gold medal, reflecting advanced placement or international baccalaureate tests.
