GOWANDA/PINE VALLEY

GOWANDA — Nick Jacobson caught a tying touchdown as time expired and Carson Fairbank added the game-winning point-after kick as Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton stunned Gowanda/Pine Valley 29-28 in nonleague action.

The Eagles (6-1, 5-1) took over at their own 43-yard line with two minutes remaining. As time ran out, quarterback Brayden Gibbs threw to Jacobson in the end zone, who caught the tying 20-yard touchdown pass.

“I thought we were pretty comfortable with the play call there,” Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton head coach Ryan Gibbs said. “At the end of the game, with the ball in Brayden’s hands looking for Nick, I’ll take that.”

Gibbs finished 18 of 29 for a career-high 341 yards and four touchdowns with Jacobson catching eight of the passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns.

“Asher Olson got hurt last week, he’s a big part of the offense and defense,” Coach Gibbs said. “Carson (Fairbank) went down and was only kicking for us. Devin Hewes hurt his ankle. Down three of our big targets, other guys made some big plays when we needed them to.”

The victory was the sixth straight for the Eagles, who lost their season-opening game to Salamanca, the New York State Sportswriters Association’s No. 2 Class C team.

“I don’t think we’re surprising anybody else anymore,” Coach Gibbs said.
