Triad, northwest NC infrastructure projects seek funding approval

The state Local Government Commission will address Tuesday funding requests for two Triad infrastructure improvements projects.

The commission, chaired by Treasurer Dale Folwell, has a statutory duty to approve most debt issued by units of local government and public authorities in the state.

Stokes County is asking for approval of an $11 million installment purchase to improve and expand the county courthouse. In an installment purchase costs are paid over time instead of up front.

The town of Mebane is requesting approval for a $7.6 million installment purchase for a spillway replacement in Lake Michael Park. The project is needed to provide safety during heavy rainfall. The commission also will consider financing for multiple lead service line inventory in Eden.

Meanwhile, the Golden Leaf Board of Directors has awarded $1.38 million to Ashe County toward clearing, grading, erosion control and construction of a 15,000-square-foot shell building to be located at Ashe County Industrial Park.

Ashe officials expect construction of a shell building could attract a business that would spend $3 million on capital investments and create 30 new jobs with an average annual salary of $42,900.
