Sunderland have completed the loan signing of Jayden Danns at Liverpool until the end of the season, but the striker will remain at Liverpool for now to undergo rehabilitation on a back injury.
The 19-year-old academy graduate has also signed a new and improved long-term contract at Liverpool, in recognition of his impressive development over the past 12 months.
His injury is likely to prevent him making his Sunderland debut for several weeks, but due to the club’s season extending to late May should they reach the EFL Championship play-offs, there is optimism that the striker can make an impact. Danns said of his transfer:
💬 “This is my first loan move and a chance to prove myself, so I’m very appreciative of the opportunity and I’m grateful to the club for placing their faith in me.
“I’ve done my research and the team is incredible, so this feels like the right step. I’m disappointed that I will be unable to do that straightaway, but I’m proud to have joined the club and I will work hard throughout this period to ensure I can return to action and play my part.”
Danns, who has scored three goals in nine senior appearances for the club, became the youngest player in Liverpool’s history to start a Champions League game when he lined up against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.
Liverpool hope that regular game time in the Championship will enable him to make further progress over the coming months.
Danns, son of former Crystal Palace midfielder Neil, has arrived in Sunderland to undergo a medical as he prepares to join their push for promotion.
