Our sports department, recognized as one of the nation’s best for nearly three decades, has received another batch of impressive awards. In the annual Associated Press Sports Editors contest, The News-Gazette was voted Top 10 in two categories: digital (news-gazette.com and IlliniHQ.com) and special sections (Memorial Stadium’s 100-year celebration). It marks our 15th consecutive year with at least one Top 10 finish (section or website).
Individually:
- Anthony Zilis
- placed Top 5 nationally in Excellence in Video for his work at the Illinois-Michigan football game.
- Jim Dey
- placed Top 10 nationally in Breaking News for his coverage of Terrence Shannon Jr.’s trial.
This year’s APSE contest, with judging based in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., recognized work published in 2024. A total of 178 news organizations from across the country entered. Winners will be celebrated at this summer’s APSE convention in Minneapolis.
