ELKINS — A strong field of high school cross teams take to the Davis & Elkins College Course today for the Class AA, Region I championships.

The girls race starts at 11 a.m. and the boys step off at 11:45 a.m.

Three of the top four teams ranked in the runwv.com power ratings will take part in the boys race, including No. 1 Elkins, which captured the Big 10 Conference title last week.

Challenging the Tigers for the regional crown will be third-rated Grafton and No. 4 Williamstown.

East Fairmont, North Marion, Oak Glen, Weir and Wheeling Central round out the field.

Elkins sophomore Trevor George, the state’s top-rated runner in Class AA, is the favorite to win the individual title, along with teammate Josh Bodkins, Grafton’s M.J. Niggemyer and Williamstown’s Julian Johnson.

George was named the Big 10 Runner of the Year, while Bodkins placed second in the Big 10 meet and Gavin Brown fourth as both earned All-Big 10 honors.

The girls field is equally stacked, with No. 1 Williamstown and No. 3 Elkins the favorites.

Williamstown features the state’s top-rated runner in Alyssa Sauro, while Elkins sophomore Emilia Tenney is third.

Tenney earned first-team All-Big-10 recognition with a second-place finish in 19:38.

The Lady Tigers hope to get Julia Biola back for today’s race. The sophomore missed the Big 10 meet with an injury and is rated 12th in the state.

The top three team finishes advance to the state meet slated for Nov. 2 at Cabell Midland High School in Ona.
