A Japanese-inspired retreat nestled in the woods, Shoji Spa has officially been declared one of The Gemmies in the United States by our team of local travel experts. The 2025 Gemmies are a collection of destinations that are a true representation of their state. To experience these gems is to know the heartbeat of their American locations and we think they are all worthy of a visit.
Driving up the steep driveway to Shoji Spa, just minutes from the heart of Asheville, we weren’t sure what to expect. The setting seemed unassuming and casual, but the moment we arrived and set foot inside the spa facility, we felt as though we had traveled beyond the realm of Western North Carolina.
The spa started in 2006 after its owner, Roberta Jordan, returned from Japan and was inspired by the country’s focus on wellness. She decided to establish her own Japanese-inspired spa within the mountains of North Carolina and Pisgah National Forest.
After checking in at the front desk, guests are invited to change into a Japanese Yukata, which is a cotton robe, and a pair of sandals before being led to a private hot tub surrounded by trees. The walk down to the tub set the stage for a tranquil experience. The facility’s beautiful architecture and landscaping felt like an invitation to completely unwind.
The tubs themselves are transformative. These salt-infused hydrotherapy tubs encourage muscle relaxation and healing. A shower is required before entering the tub. The price for an hour-long soak is currently $90 per person and includes access to the 180-degree wet cedar sauna as well as open-air double-cold showers for contrast therapy. Another amenity you can add to your experience for an additional price is tub-side Japanese tea service, where staff will bring its Signature Tea Blend, raw honey, and Japanese tea crackers to your tub.
We opted for the traditional soak experience without tea service. In addition to the soothing tub water, the setting really stood out from the experience. The calmness of the woods brings to mind the art of forest bathing, another Japanese tradition where you spend time in nature to connect with the environment through your senses. Shoji brings an even more literal element to the concept of forest bathing, placing the tubs right in the center of the forest. And the grounding, calming effect cannot be understated!
Massage services are also available for those looking for an even deeper relaxation experience. World-class therapists offer several different styles of massage, including Swedish, Deep Tissue, Four Hands, Hot Stone, and Prenatal. For more information, including rates and reservations, be sure to visit the official Shoji Spa & Lodge website. You can also call (828) 299-0999 for more information.
