What stars wear is frequently a source for emulation, and this year was no exception. Google has officially revealed its top trending celebrity outfits for 2023, and the notables who made the list aren’t much of a surprise.
Between Margot Robbie’s enviable Barbie-inspired fashions and Taylor Swift‘s many “Eras Tour” ensembles, these A-listers conquered the internet when it came to their wardrobes.
Here, WWD looks back at which singers, actors and athletes went viral for their style in 2023.
Margot Robbie
During the “Barbie” press tour, Robbie took the Barbiecore trend to new heights by channeling several of the doll’s iconic ensembles, all curated by stylist Andrew Mukamal. He tapped the talents of several designers including Vivienne Westwood, Emilio Pucci and Schiaparelli to recreate looks from Barbie’s vintage wardrobe. Chanel and Versace also opened up their archives for Robbie, lending her several pieces that were previously modeled by ’90s supers like Claudia Schiffer and Christy Turlington.
Taylor Swift
Swift’s three-hour “Eras Tour” show naturally calls for numerous costume changes: the singer’s onstage wardrobe consists of multiple designer gowns and lots of sparkle. Aside from her trademark uniform of a bedazzled Versace bodysuit and Christian Louboutin boots, Swift has sported several beaded looks by Oscar de la Renta and Roberto Cavalli. Among Swift’s custom-made gowns were ethereal frocks by Alberta Ferretti and Elie Saab.
After Swift’s relationship with Travis Kelce was catapulted into the spotlight, the pop star’s game-day style also became the subject of trending Google searches. Swift frequently sports the Kansas City Chiefs’ team colors of red, white and gold with help from trendy brands like Stella McCartney, Balenciaga and Area.
Keke Palmer
Between the release of her second album — and her first in more than a decade — “Big Boss” and welcoming her first child with Darius Jackson, 2023 has been a big year for Keke Palmer. The actress and singer’s fashions have also trended on Google, with her colorful press tour wardrobe and her Met Gala appearance being major highlights. Palmer tapped the talents of Sergio Hudson to craft her tweed strapless gown, perfectly channeling the fete’s annual theme, which paid homage to Chanel’s former creative director, Karl Lagerfeld.
Travis Kelce
Thanks to his superstar S.O., Swift, Kelce’s style has also made headlines. Many Swifties suspect that Kelce is channeling her various “Eras” with his wardrobe, nodding to Swift’s “Evermore” album cover in plaid and wearing a matching KidSuper set with an aptly named “1989 Bedroom Painting” pattern.
Sam Smith
Sam Smith reinvented his image in 2023, flaunting avant-garde couture at awards shows and onstage throughout their recent “Gloria Tour.” Earlier this year, Smith made a splash at The Brit Awards in a Harri latex jumpsuit with exaggerated features.
Smith sported several costume changes while performing at the O2 Arena in London. The singer donned a ruffled tulle robe by Tomo Koizumi (which they later re-wore for their “Saturday Night Live” appearance), as well as an emerald satin gown by Valentino. Smith also worked closely with up-and-coming designer Ed Marler, who crafted gilded corsetry for their tour.
Ice Spice
From Lil Kim to Cardi B, female rappers are known to be trendsetters. Ice Spice is following in their footsteps as her looks rank among Google’s top celebrity style searches this year. With the revival of Y2K fashion in full swing, Ice Spice’s velour tracksuits, chunky diamond chains and kitschy graphic T-shirts were poised for popularity in 2023.
Karol G
Swift wasn’t the only superstar songstress to travel the world this year — Karol G also smashed records with her groundbreaking “Mañana Será Bonito Tour” in 2023. The Colombian singer’s rhinestoned catsuit, designed by Bryan Hearns, took hints from one of Britney Spears’ iconic looks.
Karol G also made a splash on the red carpet this year, sporting equally sparkly ensembles by Emilio Pucci, Balmain and Diesel at award shows and movie premieres.
