HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Even on Thanksgiving, shoppers I talked to were still hauling out buggies full of groceries.
Many of them told me they felt they were paying higher prices for their groceries. Others said they felt they were getting good deals.
Experts said the truth is somewhere in the middle.
As last-minute shoppers grabbed the last few items before the start of Thanksgiving meals, I talked to people about their expenses.
Many shoppers felt items on the shelf to make the perfect feast are more expensive than last year.
But, the latest survey from the American Farm Bureau Federation said you could be spending less on Thanksgiving dinner.
Stan Mullen, a food truck owner, believes he got good deals because of where he was shopping.
“Comparatively speaking, it was either the same or less. There was some great deals that I found with turkeys that I found at Walmart– I take that back,” he said. “Kroger actually had it with a digital coupon and Walmart had them at 88 cents so I’ve never got them quite that cheap.”
Ben Meadows, an assistant economics professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said your grocery tab may be higher this year, but it depends on what you buy.
“If you’re doing a breakfast casserole to start the morning out, bacon is down 3.5 percent,” he said. “If you are thinking about doing a Thanksgiving ham, ham is down 2.7 percent.”
If you felt you overspent on Thanksgiving, you still have Christmas to try to get it right.
Experts also advise you shop around to see what stories provide you the best deals for the items you’re looking for.
