NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Tennessee’s tax-free weekend starts Friday and runs through late Sunday night, providing a perfect opportunity for parents to stock up on school supplies and electronics without paying sales tax.

Natalie Rae, a mom preparing her 5-year-old for kindergarten, shares how the tax-free weekend is a big relief for her family.

“Knowing that it’s tax-free weekend is going to be incredible,” says Natalie. “He can come with me and go shopping for anything he wants. A new school, that whole transition is tough for kindergarteners or rising kindergarteners, so that’ll be nice. I’m looking forward to it.”

During this tax-free period, shoppers can purchase clothing, school supplies, and computers without paying any sales tax, both in-person and online. Shopping expert Trae Bodge highlights the significant savings available, especially on tech items.

“HP, which also has education pricing, is having amazing deals right now,” says Trae Bodge. “If you need a phone, Mint Mobile has back-to-school pricing where you can save up to $400 on Pixel phones and get six months of service for free when you sign up for six months.”

What’s exempt for tax-free weekend?

The tax-free weekend ends Sunday at 11:59PM. Clothing and school supplies are tax-free as long as each item costs $100 or less. Tech enthusiasts can also benefit from tax-free status on some gadgets priced at $1,500 or less, including laptops and tablets.

“This tax-free weekend is a great time to get those very specific items or if your child has a certain pair of jeans they want,” Trae advises. “Focus on pricier, specific items now, and you’ll see deals rolling through the end of July and into August, allowing you to save throughout the back-to-school season.”

Trae also reminds shoppers to avoid going into debt this weekend, as that will ultimately cost more than the money saved. She suggests waiting to stock up on new clothes for the fall and winter, as bigger discounts on those items will be available heading into the fall.
