USA Olympics History

Team USA Olympics Betting Favourites

First up, let’s look at how many gold medals Team USA is expected to amass in France this summer by looking back at what they achieved during the most recent Olympic Games:

Olympics Winner Gold Silver Bronze
2000 Sydney USA 37 24 33
2004 Athens USA 36 39 26
2008 Beijing China 48 22 30
2012 London USA 48 26 30
2016 Rio USA 46 37 38
2020 Tokyo USA 39 41 33

USA Olympic Medal Odds

Based on the last six Olympics since 2000, US bettors could be looking at an average of around 42 gold medals in France, so it’s no surprise that the oddsmakers are thinking along the same lines.

Total Gold Medals Odds
Over 39.5 -145
Under 39.5 +110

There could be plenty of interest in Bovada’s -145 for Team USA to rack up 40 gold medals or more, as they are sending a power-packed group of athletes to bring home the medals, with Lebron James, Scottie Scheffler, and Coco Gauff to name just a few – but, more on those later.

Most Olympic Medals Odds

As for which nation will collect the most medals overall, that’s gold, silver, and bronze for you, Olympic newbies! – then again, it is Team USA who are Bovada’s favorites:

Nation Odds
USA -900
China +450
France +6600
Great Britain +8000
Japan +8000

China will be pushing Team USA all the way, however, and a glance back at recent history shows that the scores between the two nations were 113-89, 121-70, and 104-92 in the US’s favor during the last three renewals. But with fairly skinny betting odds of -900 for another USA victory this time around, there may be bigger odds elsewhere about them triumphing, namely in betting on how many they will actually win overall…

Total Medals Odds (O/U)

As highlighted previously, Team USA racked up medal totals of 113, 121, and 104 during the last three occasions in Tokyo, Brazil, and London.

Total Medals Odds
Over 120.5 -150
Under 120.5 +115

At first glance, it appears Bovada may have pitched the number fairly high, considering Team USA’s highest recent tally of 121 came in a fairly nearby continent in Brazil. In contrast, their lowest came in Europe (London). A coincidence, maybe, or possibly the varying summer conditions suit individual athletes differently? On that basis, there could be more value in the ‘Under’ market in Paris.

Team USA Betting Picks

What looks set to really grab the attention of most USA Olympics betting fans, though, are the star names on show. In Paris, a mouth-watering cast awaits, including, of course, the basketball team.

Olympics Basketball Odds

Start Date: July 27
Star Player: LeBron James

As the top-ranked men’s basketball team in the world, Team USA is rightly the bookmakers’ -475 favorite to make it a fifth straight Olympic gold medal in France.

Bettors can also be happy as they looked in good form during Team USA’s recent exhibition win over Serbia 105-79, Australia 98-92, and Canada 86-72 – in the process, parading their roster of NBA superstars such as LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant; the latter already has three Olympic golds under his belt.

Team USA will undoubtedly be happy to have their NBA stars back. Before the recent exhibition friendlies, in qualification, they lost 67-81 to Cuba, 118-127 to Canada, and 111-113 to Germany when some star names were missing. It will be interesting to see what Team USA does now that they are back to full strength in their final prep against Germany on 22 July, prior to their Olympics opener against Serbia on July 28.

Sports bettors are also spoilt for choice when it comes to the range of Olympic basketball odds, with markets for Leading USA Assists, Leading USA Points Scorer, and Leading USA Rebound, to name just several.

The women also head to Paris, oozing confidence and having won seven consecutive gold medals. The team also consists of plenty of experienced names from their 2020 Tokyo success, including the legendary Diana Taurasi, who returns for a record sixth Olympics.

While the women’s basketball team will once more prove strong, they will need to click into gear sooner than the men, with only two exhibition matches lined up before their opening clash with Japan on July 29.

Olympics Beach Volleyball Odds

Start Date: July 27
Star Player: Chase Budinger

While Beach Volleyball may not jump off the page at first, it may be a different matter in Paris as millions of US viewers will be back home watching former NBA player Chase Budinger. Having won volleyball titles in high school, Budinger went on to bigger things in the NBA before retiring and heading back for a crack at the Olympics, where he’ll get to go for glory in front of the iconic Eiffel Tower.

Paired with Miles Evans and ranked No.13 in the world, they took the final U.S. Olympic Beach Volleyball spot for Paris at the trials, and it would be a Hollywood story if they triumphed at massive odds of +5000. However, Andy Benesh and Miles Partain (ranked No.4 in the world) could be Team USA’s best shot (+1400).

Olympics Golf Odds

Start Date: July 26
Star Player: Scottie Scheffler

With all four of golf’s majors completed already in 2024, golf fans are in for an extra treat with arguably the ‘fifth major’ getting underway in Paris on August 1.

Scottie Scheffler is the Olympics Golf betting favouriteScottie Scheffler is the Olympics Golf betting favourite

The defending champion, Xander Schauffele (+700), returns to win back-to-back golds, adding his first major at the PGA back in May. But all eyes will be on ‘man of the moment’, Scottie Scheffler, who has dismantled his rivals in winning six big events since March this year and is understandably Bovada’s +350 favorite to win the USA Olympics betting gold in golf this summer.

Team USA will also be represented by Collin Morikawa (+1200), another major winner, and their chance of landing gold looks strong.

As with Schauffele, fellow proud American Nelly Korda will be seeking another gold medal in the women’s equivalent after triumphing at Tokyo 2020, and her odds of +400 could tempt favorite bettors despite a recent loss of form. Korda won six of seven tournaments prior to June but has missed the cut three times since. A watching brief in the opening round could be advised before hitting the ‘bet’ button.

Olympics Soccer Odds

Start Date: July 26
Star Player: Sophia Smith

Unlike men’s soccer at the Olympics, the women’s equivalent has no age restrictions, which will inevitably see some very strong squads arrive in Paris—none more so than the USWNT.

Although new coach Emma Hayes left out the legendary Alex Morgan, she has the likes of Lindsey Horan, Rose Lavelle, Crystal Dunn, and Sophia Smith at her disposal.

Having won gold three times since 2004, Team USA is expected to be around the +175 mark, with European champions Spain breathing down their necks at +200.

Olympics Gold Silver Bronze
2000 Sydney Norway USA Germany
2004 Athens USA Brazil Germany
2008 Beijing USA Brazil Germany
2012 London USA Japan Canada
2016 Rio Germany Sweden Canada
2020 Tokyo Canada Sweden USA

Those USA Olympics betting odds are entirely justified, too, especially considering they lost only one of their last 18 matches—a 0-2 reverse to Mexico in February.

Canada and Germany both have fantastic pedigrees in the event. The former is set to defend its gold medal crown from 2020, having taken the bronze in the previous two renewals.

The main dangers, however, will be the reigning World Cup winners, Spain, who’ll arrive full of confidence after taking the world crown in 2023 – for the record, the USA’s last clash with Spain came back in 2022 when losing a friendly 0-2 during a rare sequence of three straight defeats for USWNT.

As for the men’s chances (Under 23’s), well, it may not shock you to learn they are odds of +2000 to win their first gold medal. They’ll do well to get past the likes of hosts France, Spain, and Argentina, especially having won just two of their last nine games. However, if you’re the type of bettor who likes to look for value when soccer betting, a speculative, low-risk wager will undoubtedly spice up the action from your sofa.

Olympics Swimming Odds

Start Date: July 27
Star Swimmer: Katie Ledecky

Once again, it’s the women who look set to make all the Paris headlines in the pool. Superstar Katie Ledecky leads the charge to make a splash for medals for those USA Olympics betting this summer.

With a huge social media following since making her debut at the 2012 Olympics, Ledecky arrives in Paris as the current holder of four world records for the 800m Freestyle (short and long course) and 1500m Freestyle (short and long course).

This will be her fourth Olympics, and Bovada is not taking any chances by making her the -450 favorite for the Women’s 800m Freestyle.

Elsewhere, leading chances for the gold come in the 100m Backstroke, where Regan Smith is -105 for glory, while in the 100m Butterfly, sports bettors can get -200 for Gretchen Walsh landing gold.

The men, meanwhile, have a couple of outstanding prospects of taking gold in the 100m Backstroke with Ryan Murphy at +150, while Team USA is looking good for 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay at -300. With so many solid favorites, some bettors may choose to go for an Olympics parlay.

Olympics Tennis Odds

Start Date: July 27
Stadium: Stade Roland Garros (clay)

An annual event on the tennis betting calendar, Paris is the home of the historic French Open and the Stade Roland Garris. The century-old clay courts will open for the second time this summer for a salivating renewal of the Tennis Olympics, where a host of top stars are on show, including all the big guns in the Men’s:

olympics tennis odds on bovadaolympics tennis odds on bovada

While it’s unlikely Team USA will get amongst the medals, it remains a mouth-watering line-up, with recent Wimbledon winner and runner-up Alcaraz and Djokovic set to clash again. At the same time, there won’t be a dry eye in the stadium should the 2008 Olympic champ Nadal roll back the years on his beloved clay surface.

There are more reasons to be cheerful in terms of US success in Women’s Tennis, where Coco Gauff will look to topple the current world No.1, Iwa Swiatek, who only made the third round at the 2020 Olympics.

Still only 20, this will be Gauff’s first taste of the Olympics. Having won the 2023 US Open while also reaching the French Open final here on clay, she will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Serena Williams, who also took Olympic gold in 2012. Gauff will need to be better, however, than when soundly beaten by Swiatek in the French semis a few months ago (2-6, 4-6).

Olympics Track & Field Odds

Start Date: August 1
Stadium: Stade de France

Millions of US viewers worldwide will tune in to watch the Track and Field schedule when it gets going on 1 August, as many consider these athletic disciplines to be the true marquee events of any Olympics, especially for Americans.

America’s success story in athletics stretches back decades, and they will again remain very strong in Paris, where Bovada has some tempting odds available for bettors to build a parlay.

The big event is the Men’s 100m, where Noah Lyles is the +175 second favorite to get the better of Jamaican Kishane Thompson (+120) and regain this prestigious crown for his country that last won this event in 2004. Thompson, on the other hand, will be looking to make it four 100m golds for Jamaica in the last five Olympic Games.

Clock-watchers may also want to note that Bovada quotes the Men’s 100m World Record To Be Broken as a +1200 chance, with -3300 for it to stay intact.

If Lyle misses out in the 100m, then compensation could await in the 200m, where he is Bovada’s -350 favorite to go two places than when landing bronze in 2020, while fellow countryman Kenny Bednarek is +550.

America also has a decent pedigree in the Men’s 110m Hurdles, which has resulted in gold for Team USA in four of the last 10 renewals. It could be a fifth gold as they look nailed on to win courtesy of the first three in the betting: Grant Holloway -650, Freddie Crittenden +1000, and Daniel Roberts +1200.

Elsewhere, Team USA holds solid gold chances in the following Track and Field events where the odds suggest they should be going very close:

Men’s 400m: Quincy Hall +175
400m Hurdles: Rai Benjamin +110
Men’s Shot Put: Ryan Crouser -155, Joe Kovacs +190

There are also a host of outstanding prospects in the Women’s Track and Field events, starting in the Women’s 100m—an event America won four consecutive times from 1984 to 1996, prior to Jamaica landing gold on the last four occasions.

Shericka Jackson is +450 to make it a fifth straight gold for Jamaica, but US sports bettors will be cheering on the -180 favorite Sha’carri Richardson to win the sprinting crown back for America.

It’s a similar story in the Women’s 200m, where Gabby Thomas is EVEN for Team USA to beat Jamaica’s Jackson +275, while in the Women’s 400m Hurdles, the record-breaking Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (USA) holds a massive chance at -700.

In the Field Events, the Women’s Discus Throw looks at the mercy of Valarie Allman (USA) -667, with further solid prospects for Team USA in the Women’s Hammer Throw with DeAnna Price the +150 second favorite to topple current market leader from Canada in Camryn Rogers (-133).

Bettors should also make a further note of the following events where the US looks strong:

Women’s Long Jump: Tara Davis-Woodhall (USA) +135
Women’s Shot Put: Chase Jackson (USA) +110

Best Of The Rest

Having examined the main events, it’s time to assess a few others capable of making headlines, including an event making its debut: Breaking—or Breakdancing, as others may know it.

The current world champion, America’s Victor Bermudez Montalvo, is the +250 second favorite to land the inaugural gold medal for the popular 80s dance craze, which is still going strong decades later! Sunny Choi will represent the women breakers.

Finally, if you’re wondering where the Olympics Gymnastics odds are, then unfortunately, there aren’t any, simply because the event is based on the judge’s scores. Parlay bettors will be a touch disappointed, too, as Simone Biles looks ready for further glory in the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics team, with additional interest in Fred “Frederick Flips” Richard for the Men’s events following his Olympic trials victory earlier this year.
