Ohio sales tax holiday is growing substantially in duration this year to 10 days began on July 30 and ends on Aug. 8.
The event started as an opportunity to save on school-related supplies for the upcoming school year. This year some changes have been made to include more than school supplies.
According to the Ohio Department of Taxation, the sales tax holiday will include all tangible personal property worth $500 or less.
This also includes purchases made online during the exemption period. If all items purchased in the shipment are eligible the shipping and handling charges are not taxable as well.
Also exempt from sales tax is the check at restaurants.
While the restaurants are also included in the tax-free holiday, some items on the menu are not. The Ohio Department of Taxation says that alcoholic beverages are not included in the tax-free days.
Apart from alcoholic beverages other products are also not eligible during the holiday. Tobacco, vapor products, watercraft, outboard motor vehicles that are required to be titled and motor vehicles are not exempt from sales tax.
The tax-free holiday in Ohio began in 2015 and was originally only three days. This year it has more than tripled in the amount of time Ohioans have to shop tax-free.
