CLYMER — If Westfield boys basketball coach Nolan Swanson was required to grade his team’s performance after three games, he said he’d give the Wolverines a “B-minus.”
As for individual evaluations, he declined to offer an opinion, but for anyone who witnessed the all-around talents of his son on Monday night, it would be hard to award the senior guard anything less than an A-plus.
Carson Swanson poured in 41 points to lead Westfield to a convincing 76-32 victory over Clymer in a nonleague game
Showing the ability to shoot from distance (four 3-pointers), drive to the basket or throw down dunks (he had three of those), the 6-foot-2 senior was a dominant force in propelling the Wolverines to their win.
Lincoln Thomas added 12 points, Zach Maguire chipped in 9 and Grant Beadle had 8 for Westfield, which finished 1-1 in last weekend’s Fort LeBeouf (Pennsylvania) Tournament in which it lost to Erie First Christian Academy by three points in the opener and then dominated Northwestern 76-32 in the second game.
The final score was the same against the Pirates (0-1), who are just trying to work out the kinks for Coach Irv King after getting a late start with a complete team because of the success of the state champion Clymer/Sherman/Panama football team.
Last night was close for the first four minutes as the Pirates’ Carson White’s 3-pointer tied the game at 7-all. But then Carson Swanson scored 13 points in the final 31/2 minutes to give Westfield a 20-11 lead heading into the second period.
By halftime, the Wolverines’ margin had ballooned to 34-16 (with 21 points belonging to Swanson). The second half was even more onesided as the visitors outscored the hosts 42-16.
Clymer was led by Carson White with 8 points and Eli Mitchell added 7.
