STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – A Staten Island elementary school student has won the New York state competition for the 16th annual Doodle for Google art contest, and now faces off against the best from across the nation to win the overall title—which is determined by a public vote.
Google announced that Benson Li, a student at P.S. 56 The Louis Desario School, is competing in the fourth and fifth grade category with his creative and futuristic drawing, titled “The Future of Transportation.”
Entrants had to create a piece in response to Google’s thematic prompt, “My wish for the next 25 years…”
“This Doodle I drew is what I think transportation might look like over the next 25 years of hard work and dedication,” Benson wrote in his contest submission. “It represents my wish for the next 25 years because my wish is for humanity to have transportation that can drive itself more safely so we can save time and do other things in the car and that over the next 25 years transportation will improve.”
Benson’s drawing shows the Google logo imagined as a transport floating high above earth, which is pictured in the background.
Staten Islanders can support Benson’s quest for the national title by voting for his art on the contest website at doodles.google.com/d4g/. To vote, navigate to the fourth and fifth grade category and then to the New York entry.
Voting is open until June 4.
The contest winner will receive a $55,000 college scholarship, a $50,000 tech package for their school and will have their art featured onGoogle.com.
