So, you want to bet on the Super Bowl?

If you’re a novice bettor, there are a few things you should know before diving into the countless markets available for the big game. Chief among them are the prop bets specific to the Super Bowl and the Super Bowl only. What does it all mean?

While sportsbooks offer an expanded version of the typical player and game props you see throughout the NFL season, they also make up dozens of new bets that you’ll only see for the Super Bowl. Some come up annually, like bets on the national anthem, and some are specific to the matchup — this year’s featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

In this guide, we’ll explain as many of those unique Super Bowl props as possible, so you aren’t caught off guard when you see them in your sportsbook app.

The Highland Mint in Melbourne produces the official flip coin for the Super Bowl LIX. Workers are presently working on the official flip coin, and will go into production immediately after the game to produce collectible coins for the winning team.

The first of the so-called novelty props, the coin toss is self-explanatory but gets at the heart of how every little detail about the Super Bowl can be bet on. Will the coin toss land on heads or tails? And which team will win it?

Those pre-game bets don’t just start and end with the coin toss. You can also bet on the national anthem in some jurisdictions — or how long you think it’ll run to be exact.

According to PickWise, each of the last four Super Bowl national anthems have hit the over. But just two of those would’ve went over the two-minute line on this year’s anthem, which is set to be sung by Jon Batiste.

The Kendrick Lamar halftime show is one of the most anticipated in recent memory, and you can bet on it if you live in Canada (which is hilarious. IYKYK).

In addition to length of the set list, Canadians can also bet on which song K. Dot will perform first, with Humble as the betting favorite at +150. Not Like Us is second at +375, in case you were wondering.

This prop comes up every Super Bowl and I still have to refresh myself on exactly what it is, but the octopus is when one single player scores a touchdown and immediately converts the two-point conversion after that TD. An easy way to remember this is that the player is accounting for eight points, which is the amount of arms an octopus has. So, simply scoring on a two-point conversion is not enough to win this bet. The player has to score the TD and two-point try.

Now, will it happen? Probably not, but there were nine octopuses (octopi?) in the 2024 regular season, including one by Saquon Barkley, according to Pro-Football-Reference. So maybe there’s hope!

Another prop that comes up each year is the scorigami — or final scores we’ve never seen in NFL history. And let me be the first to tell you, after 100-plus years of NFL games, it doesn’t happen often. That’s why BetMGM has +2800 odds on it.

Now, there have been seven scorigamis this NFL season, including one in the playoffs, according to Champs or Chumps. But that only leaves seven fewer new final scores for the Eagles and Chiefs to hit in the Super Bowl.

Another novelty prop restricted in terms of which states you can bet it, the color of Gatorade to be poured on the winning coach is always widely debated each year. I have thoughts on this one!

These props are obviously unique to this specific matchup, but that tends to happen when you have a player on the type of historic run Barkley has been on this year.

Sportsbooks try to capitalize on that momentum by offering props on things like whether Barkley will break the Eagles career postseason rushing record with 150-plus yards or if he’ll break the Super Bowl rushing record with 205-plus yards, both of which are available at BetMGM.

These obviously weren’t a thing before last year’s Super Bowl — the first after Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce made their relationship public — but they’re back for a second straight year and the offerings vary by sportsbook.

Some are simply Taylor Swift-themed, like DraftKings’ “Swiftie Specials” that include things like the “Shake It Off” prop (Eagles score first and Chiefs win at +300). Some actually involve Swift, like BetMGM Canada’s prop for Kelce to propose after the game.

This is an easy one to understand but super popular as a way to find a little extra value on the moneyline. If you think the Chiefs are going to win, why not just bet on Patrick Mahomes to win MVP at +105 rather than the Chiefs to win at -125? You can also bet on the position of the MVP winner.
