WEXFORD COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) — Students got some help with holiday shopping Wednesday.

The annual Shop with a Hero took place at Walmart in Cadillac.

One hundred elementary students from across Wexford and Missaukee counties teamed up with local law enforcement to fill their Christmas wish lists.

The students were greeted by Michigan State Police troopers, National Forest Service, Wexford and Missaukee sheriff deputies and others.

Students were selected by their school counselors and each given a $100 budget to shop.

“This is a very exciting day I love it, it’s one of my favorites and these kids are so excited to shop with people and they have their little lists. They’re between 8 and 12 years old so they’re still at that age to buy toys and get grandma perfume and my aunt likes candles, they’re so excited about doing this,” said Doreen Lanc, Cadillac Area Community Foundation.

Presents were wrapped by a team of volunteers and Santa was also on hand.

Shop with a Hero was made possible due to a $12,000 grant through Walmart, Cadillac and Missaukee Area Community Foundations and Cadillac Rotary.
