Amid announcements of over 30 Stop & Shop locations closing, brand president Gordon Reid has announced his plans to step down from his role immediately and retire in mid-2025.

Reid has worked for Stop & Shop since 2019, and before that, he worked for six years at Giant Food, a grocery store under the same parent company as Stop & Shop. According to a press release from parent company Ahold Delhaize USA, Reid will remain in the company to provide leadership for strategic initiatives until his retirement.

“Gordon has made a tremendous impact on our business, having led many initiatives to reposition brands and establish future strategy,” said CEO JJ Fleeman. “His leadership has reshaped customer shopping experiences.”

Who is the new president of Stop & Shop?

Effective Sept. 30, Roger Wheeler, chief commercial officer for Ahold Delhaize USA, has been named brand president for Stop & Shop.

A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Bentley University in Waltham, Wheeler first joined the company in 2005. His positions at the company have included president of meat and seafood at Stop & Shop, senior vice president of supply chain, president of retail business services and his current position, chief commercial officer.

“It’s an honor to rejoin Stop & Shop in this leadership role. I have not only spent a significant portion of my career working at the brand but am a lifelong customer and have a strong passion for the communities Stop & Shop serves,” Wheeler said in the press release. “I look forward to working alongside our Stop & Shop team as we build upon the work underway to deepen the loyalty of our customers, operate great stores and provide excellent service every day.”
