State rankings feature local teams

Taylor Jones and the Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove Herd are ranked No. 7 in the Class C rankings by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Clymer/Sherman/Panama and Salamanca retained their No. 2 spots as the New York State Sportswriters Association released its second football rankings Wednesday.

The Wolfpack stayed in the second spot in Class D after beating Gowanda/Pine Valley 42-12 last Friday night. Clymer/Sherman/Panama will look to take over sole possession of first place in its league this Friday night when it travels to Franklinville to take on Franklinville/Ellicottville. The Titans are No. 11 in Class D, up a spot from a week ago. They beat Wilson 41-13 last Friday night.

Salamanca remained in the No. 2 spot in Class C after beating Southwestern 27-3 last Friday at Charles A. Lawson Field. The Warriors travel to the Orange Bowl in Fredonia to take on the Hillbillies in another Class C South game this Friday night.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove moved up a spot to No. 7 in Class C after beating Portville/Cuba-Rushford 34-14 last Friday night in Portville. The Herd travels to Mayville to take on Class C South foe Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton this Friday night.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton and Southwestern received honorable mention in Class C. The Eagles beat Silver Creek/Forestville 34-0 last Friday. The Trojans will visit the Black Knights this Friday.

Cattaraugus-Little Valley, Gowanda/Pine Valley and Randolph are listed as honorable mention in Class D.

The Timberwolves beat Cardinal O’Hara 50-20 for their first victory since Sept. 17, 2021, when they also beat Cardinal O’Hara. They will host Randolph this week. The Cardinals beat East Aurora/Holland 49-19 last Friday.

Gowanda/Pine Valley will travel to Wilson this Friday after losing to Clymer/Sherman/Panama without starting quarterback Carter Capozzi last week.

Jamestown received honorable mention in Class AA after beating Lockport 58-10 last Saturday afternoon. The Red & Green will take on Class AA No. 8 Bennett this Friday at All-High Stadium in Buffalo.

Frewsburg is honorable mention in 8-man after opening its season with a 56-26 win over Allegany-Limestone last Friday night. The Bears will travel to Wellsville to take on No. 10 Wellsville/Genesee Valley/Belfast this Friday.

Section IV Tioga remains No. 1 in Class D.

In Class C, Newfane is No. 8, while Alden, Eden/North Collins, Medina, Portville/Cuba-Rushford and WNY Maritime/Tapestry received honorable mention. Section IV Waverly is No. 1.

In Class AA, Canisius is No. 19 and Lancaster is No. 20, while Niagara Falls, Orchard Park and St. Francis received honorable mention. Cardinal Hayes of New York City’s Catholic High Schools League is No. 1.

In Class B, Pioneer is No. 7, Lackawanna is No. 10, South Park is No. 18 and Maryvale is No. 23, while Depew, Grand Island, Health Sciences/Buffalo Academy of Science/Global Concepts, Iroquois and Springville received honorable mention. Section IV Maine-Endwell is No. 1 in Class B.

In Class A, Clarence is No. 12, Starpoint is No. 15 and McKinley is No. 21, while Hamburg, Sweet Home and West Seneca West received honorable mention. Section VIII Garden City and Section I Somers are tied for No. 1 in Class A.

Section V Pembroke is No. 1 in 8-man.
