(KNSI) – Both of the candidates for St. Cloud Mayor voiced what they would do, if elected to take care of the aging roads and bridges around town.
In a mayoral candidate forum heard exclusively on KNSI, Councilman Jake Anderson said he wants to take a page from another Minnesota city in the name of transparency. “I would like to see us do something like the city of Duluth has started to do, which is to identify the age of all infrastructure and publicize it to say, this is how old this particular street and sewer segment is.” By doing that, he feels it creates visibility for where the city will need to prioritize replacing infrastructure.
In November of 2023, the city approved a new special assessment policy, which shifts more of the burden to property owners. Councilman Mike Conway wants to help those facing sewer and water line replacements afford them. “Do you want us to just assess the properties for that? Or should we create maybe a sewer and water fund that can save those funds so that we don’t have to do that?”
He says there are a couple of different ways to look at it, and those are conversations he wants to have.
Both men support the St. Cloud Planning Organization’s idea for a beltline around the city. They both stated that it is an idea, and there is no timetable for when or if it would be completed.
