FORESTVILLE — While Andrea Spengler doesn’t love the attention from the OBSERVER cameras at Forestville Board of Education meetings, she certainly isn’t afraid of stepping into the spotlight to take on a bigger role to support the District.

A month after she thanked Amy Drozdziel for her service to the Board, Spengler has taken over for her “great mentor and friend” as Forestville Board of Education President.

Spengler served as Vice President alongside Drozdziel for the past two years, but now steps into the role of President after accepting the nomination from Jamie Gruber. Moments later, Gruber was nominated for the role of Vice President, which she accepted. Gruber was nominated by Michelle Merritt.

The Board also welcomed its newest member, Rachel Locke, who was elected to fill the vacancy created by Drozdziel deciding not to run for reelection after 12 years on the Board.

The Board also designated each of its committee members at the recent meeting. Spengler, Jamie Hebner, and Derek Case were named to the District’s Negotiations Committee. Merritt, Hebner and Gruber were appointed to the Policy Committee. Merritt, Gruber, and Lindsey Ellis were named to the Athletic Committee. Spengler, Case and Ellis were appointed to the Audit/Finance Committee. Every member of the Board is a member of the Budget Committee and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity and Civics Committee.

Jamie Hebner was named as the CCSBA Legislative Liaison. Lindsey Ellis was named the NYSSBA Liaison.

The Board also approved annual appointments for the District at the recent meeting.

Two resignations were approved by the Board: Nathan Nobles, District Treasurer and Susan Walterich, School Library Media Specialist. Walterich was recently hired for the same role at the Fredonia Central School District.

In addition to the openings of District Treasurer and School Library Media Specialist, the District also anticipates filling the role of Director of Special Education prior to the school year, as well as other openings in the Special Education and Music departments. O’Connor said the District is attempting to “beat the competition of other districts.”

The District did, however, fill one of its openings. Alexis Schuman was appointed as a Science Teacher at Forestville High School. Schuman holds initial certification in Adolescent Education Grades 9-12. Schuman will be eligible for tenure after four years. Schuman will begin on Step B of the Collective Bargaining Agreement with a salary of $45,391.

The Board also approved a bond resolution in an amount not to exceed $295,798.50 for the purchase and financing of various school buses. The proposition pertaining to the purchase was approved by voters in late May.
