GRUNDY, Va. – Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure unveiled its new entrance sign Friday.
According to a media release, the new sign project qualified for a Small Business Empowerment Expansion grant funded by the Thompson Charitable Foundation and administered by the Southwest Workforce Development Board.
The SBEE program is open to small businesses in Buchanan and Tazewell counties who employ less than 50 and who have been operational for more than a year.
SGOA opened its doors in 2017 and since that time has hosted visitors from all 50 states and six foreign countries at its campground and cabins located at the trailhead for Spearhead Trails’ Coal Canyon Trail.
“We were pleased this week to finally get a permanent sign erected at the entrance to Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure,” Billie Campbell, one of the owners of SGOA, said. “Thanks in part to the help of a Small Business Empowerment Expansion grant, we were able to construct the sign which blends in with our natural surroundings. We owe a big thank you to them and the craftsmen and crew which built and installed it. We were pleased to host the SWDB and TCF members Friday to show them the new sign and to personally thank them for their involvement in the project.”

The sign is lighted at night and additional landscaping around the sign is planned when the weather is not so hot and dry, according to Campbell. The crew and craftsmen who built it included Jamie Stacy, Bill Campbell, Mike Hensley and Jeff Stacy. The metal work on the sign was created by Jerry’s Signs in Abingdon, VA.
