SMITHSBURG, Md.– The Town of Smithsburg has completed a temporary water shutdown as part of ongoing improvements to the Mountain Shadows area, officials announced Tuesday.
Mayor Donnie Souders said the brief interruption in service was necessary to facilitate work on the Mountain Shadows waterline loop project. The initiative aims to enhance water flow and pressure in that section of town.
“Water and water pressure have been fully restored,” Souders stated.
The project is part of broader efforts to upgrade Smithsburg’s water infrastructure. In June, the Washington County Department of Water Quality announced plans to expand the capacity of the Smithsburg Wastewater Treatment Plant from 333,000 gallons per day to 450,000 gallons per day.
These improvements align with the town’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing its water supply systems. Smithsburg’s planning commission regularly assesses the water needs of new developments for both domestic consumption and fire protection. As the third-largest municipality in Washington County, Smithsburg has seen significant growth in recent years. The town, which dates back to 1814, now serves a community of approximately 3,000 residents. Residents seeking more information about the water project or other town services can contact the Smithsburg Town Hall or visit the official town website.
