US Open preview: Sinner v Paul
Jannik Sinner is now the clear favourite to win the US Open, but America’s Tommy Paul will be looking to continue the wave of upsets in New York when he takes on the top seed this Monday night.
Matchups are beginning to get tighter now that we are into the second week of the US Open, and this one is no exception. Paul is playing some of his best tennis and has had success against Sinner in the past, so he will fancy his chances.
For Sinner, he came to New York with a huge cloud over his head. News had just broken that the Italian had tested positive for a banned substance earlier in the season, yet he was not suspended.

Major question marks lingered over how Sinner would respond mentally to all the attention, but so far, he has been impeccable.
The world No.1 has dropped just the one set, in the first round. Outside of that minor blip, he has been virtually untouchable, dropping an average of two games per set over the other nine sets he has played in New York.
Most recently, he dispatched Australia’s Christopher O’Connell 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 to book his spot in the fourth round.
For Paul, his path has been a little more challenging.
The American went to four sets with Lorenzo Sonego in the first round, edging out the Italian 6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. He then received a gift in the second round, with Max Purcell withdrawing in the third set of their match.
Most recently, Paul won an arm-wrestle with Gabriel Diallo 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (3). He will be pleased to have avoided a fifth set in what looked to be a messy contest.
Sinner v Paul US Open predictions
Tennis bookmakers are offering healthy odds for Paul to nab at least one set in this match.
The American is playing excellent tennis and will be by far the best player Sinner has faced at this US Open.
Paul has claimed a set in two of their three previous meetings, even winning their 2022 clash in Eastbourne.
Given this is best-of-five, Paul should at some stage be able to bag a set — whether it be early on before Sinner finds his groove, or later in the match when he falls behind and begins swinging from the hip.
Equally, it would be a surprise if he won more than one set. A healthy, locked-in Sinner is still a cut above Paul and should not allow this one to go the distance.
For the best return, back this one to finish 3-1 to Sinner. If Paul was to execute an upset, a bet on him to win a set would still pay, so that is the safer option.
