Should the Mets start shopping their suprise ace?

The Mets 2024 campaign has slowly turned into a disaster.

The blue and orange have gone from a team that had recovered from a slow start in April, and experts pegged as a team that could realistically challenge for the final National League wild-card spot to 10 games under .500 at the one-third point of the campaign.

While there is time for the Mets to turn things around, all signs point to another unsuccessful campaign, and it may be time for the organization to begin thinking about who they should trade at the deadline this summer.

While star first baseman Pete Alonso will likely command all the headlines, the blue and orange may keep the fan favorite around in hopes of coming to an agreement on an extension; perhaps the surprise ace of the staff should be the one the Mets start shopping.

Should the Mets start shopping Luis Severino

The Mets signed Luis Severino this past offseason to a one-year contract worth $13 million, hoping the 30-year-old just needed a change of scenery to regain his former all-star form.

Severino has done just that and turned into the squad’s ace, with Kodai Senga still dealing with a shoulder strain that has kept him out since February.

The right-hander pitched 58.2 innings across 10 games to a 3.22 ERA with a 1.159 WHIP and 50 strikeouts.

With Severino’s recent success, the 30-year-old will likely command quite the payday, and now may be the time to cash in for the blue and orange.

What could the Mets realistically get in return for Severino

The Flushing Faithful will need to temper their expectations for the return the blue and orange will get for Severino, especially when compared to deals of Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander at last year’s deadline.

Instead, president of baseball operations David Stearns will likely get a haul similar to what the St. Louis Cardinals received for Jordan Montgomery last year. The Cardinals received two top-15 prospects from the Texas Rangers, (No. 11) Tekoah Roby and (No.14 )Thomas Saggese, alongside a player with big-league experience in John King.

If the blue and orange begin to shop Severino now, they could receive a similar offer, which would massively boost their farm system, which desperately needs rejuvenation.
