Shop downtown Bloomington for the holidays and discover something for everyone

Must read

‘Tis the season to enjoy the glow of the Monroe County Courthouse Canopy of Lights. This sparkling holiday tradition brings a festive spirit to downtown Bloomington.

Bring the kids to see Santa at Fountain Square. While there make sure to send a letter via the Santa Mail box located in the atrium. Children who drop in their letters by Dec. 15 will get a return letter from Santa. Detailed Santa hours can be found at fountainsquarebloomington.com.

Holiday shopping in downtown Bloomington is pretty special. With the lights and variety of locally owned shops it brings with it a good feeling of supporting the community you live in. With online shopping continuing to increase, it is more important than ever to shop local first for holiday gift giving.

Downtown shops provide beautiful, fashion forward clothing and accessories. With the popularity of experienced based gifts downtown has much to offer all ages and interests. There are shops with skilled staff to help with questions about hobbies including cooking, painting, reading, music and outdoor adventure. With the variety of museums, theater, live concerts and comedy available through the year, a gift certificate with the opportunity to create a memorable moment is plentiful. Wellness and self-care currently resonate with 53% of consumers. Try a scented lotion, candle, or gift certificate for a spa day for your loved one and/ or one for yourself. All of us love to go out for a shared meal. With over 90 restaurants downtown you are sure to find an artisanal treat, specialty cocktail or special favorite menu.

This is a time of celebrating, sharing and giving. It is a time to be grateful and think of others in need. It is a time to donate or volunteer at a local nonprofit to help with clothing, food and shelter.

To support you and our local businesses, the city of Bloomington is offering free parking both on the street and in the garages beginning at 5 p.m. Dec. 19 through Christmas Eve.

Thank you to all those putting a festive touch on downtown: Monroe County, Cassady Electrical Contractors, CFC Properties, city of Bloomington, Indiana University, Downtown Bloomington Inc. and all the small businesses with decorated windows. It is a beautiful time of year.

Treat yourself to Constellation Stage and Screen’s “The Wizard of Oz” running Dec. 12-29 — it is a must see. There’s no place like home for the holidays!

Talisha Coppock is executive director of Downtown Bloomington Inc. and Monroe Convention Center.
