Shop Birkenstock for your entire Christmas gifting list this year

Must read

Much like Crocs, I resisted the Birkenstock trend — despite being born in Tacoma, Washington, the land of hikers and granola. But unlike Crocs, I fell in love with Birkenstock. Now — you’ll have to pry them off my cold, dead body when the day comes, of course.

Now, you may be judging my crunchy roots and writing me off, but I wear heels like the best of them! Believe me, when I say Birkenstock has become a staple in my classic wardrobe, office included.

You can find me in Central Park in mid-January wearing a puffy Moncler and my beloved Madrid Big Buckle Birks. I understand I’m an odd duck, but as a New Yorker (it’s been 13 years; I’ve earned it), I also know comfort.

Maybe you remember Sarah Jessica Parker showing off her Madrid Big Buckle flats in Just Like That paired with the Gen Z ankle sock trend as she walked through the airport. Parker and I both know our feet are our tires; we want them well-cushioned and supported, even if that means taking a break from heels.

What makes them so special? The footbed distributes your weight evenly across the shoe. Your arches, or non-arches, are supported with a cushy cork and latex base that helps alleviate aches that can occur in your lower back from other shoes.

One rule to note: whether you choose a clog, sandal, or shearling-lined slipper, every pair of Birks needs a proper break-in. So wear it around the house a few times before going on a 5-mile walk. There is nothing wrong with your shoe; it just needs a “get to know you” kind of moment.

Birkenstock makes great gifts, and with the holidays around the corner, we highly recommend stocking up for everyone in the family. Why not wait until Black Friday sales? Trust us, these beauties will most likely be sold out by then. Now is the time.
