A closing date has not yet been announced for the Deertrace Kohler Joann store.
SHEBOYGAN COUNTY – Housing projects, business closings and a new generation of family business owners were among the top business headlines for February.
In addition, we checked out how several employers provide child care support for staff, shared the latest on redevelopment plans for the former Jakum’s Hall site and featured two Sheboygan Falls businesses — a hybrid bookshop and mocktail lounge called Sip&Story and a French-inspired bakery, Marilette Patisserie.
Here’s what else you might’ve missed last month.
Horkan family passes local Culver’s restaurants to new generation of owners
Ken and Jill Horkan, owner of Sheboygan’s Culver’s restaurants, passed ownership over to three of their kids, Kenny, Jessica and Jordan, at the start of the year.
The pair took over management of the Taylor Drive location in 1997, eventually opening the city’s two other locations around 2008 and 2015.
“It’s time to turn it over to the younger generation of Horkans,” Ken told the Sheboygan Press.
Sheboygan-area Joann store closing
The craft and fabrics store chain made national headlines last month, announcing all approximately 800 stores will close part of a bankruptcy case. About 500 stores were initially set to close, including the Deertrace Kohler location, but retail liquidator outbid Gordon Brothers Retail Partners for all stores.
There isn’t a closing date yet for the Sheboygan area location, but it will have a going-out-of-business sale.
Green Bicycle Co. closing in March
The Green Bicycle Co. consulting firm and retail space announced it was closing after nearly five years in the uptown Sheboygan area.
“It is with heavy hearts and much thought that we’ve decided to close Green Bicycle Co. in March,” Heather Cleveland, owner and founder of Green Bicycle Co., said in the announcement. “Thank you to all of our clients, customers, staff and the community that we’ve worked with over the past nearly five years.”
A new tenant could move in next month. Green Bicycle Co. will keep normal hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, through March 9.
Rezoning approved for Mayline property redevelopment
The City Plan Commission approved rezoning two plots of land on North Commerce Street, continuing progress to redevelop the former Mayline property into 283 apartments. The project was expanded from an initial 180 market-rate apartment and townhome units.
City Administrator Casey Bradley said the project could be bid out in the next couple of months.
