JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio — Throughout 2024 and years prior, many infrastructure projects worth millions of dollars have been completed in Steubenville.
Among was the $2.7 million Lovers Lane widening project. The engineer’s office also completed several others, including the $668,000 resurfacing project in the Brady Estates area.
“This included Johnson Road, St. Charles Drive, and we extended it to a portion of Garfield,” Steubenville Engineer Mike Dolak said. “This was a total of 475,000.
“It ran from Welday Avenue to Forest Avenue from Forest to Pico, then from Sunset to Wilshire.”
Jackson place, Granard East and West are slated for work in 2025.
On the water side of things, the department is working on a $17 million West End Water System Improvement Project.
From 2018 to 2023, they did a phase 1 and phase 2 valve and waterline replacement project.
“Currently we’re working on phase 1 water filtration plant plan improvement project,” Steubenville Water Superintendent James Jenkins said.
“We just completed the Maryland Avenue Tank Project. That was a $700,000 rehab project on the Marland Avenue tank.”
And looking toward 2025, Jenkins says they have more on their scope, such as phase 2 of the water filtration plant.
“In the future, we will be doing Belleview Tank that’s located on Franciscan’s property,” Jenkins said.
The west end behind EGCC will also be completed.
What goes into the decision-making for the projects?
“Some of the larger federal jobs that we do, that’s determined a lot on the traffic. Like the federal dollars can only be spent on federal routes,” Dolak said.
Smaller projects are funded by state grants, and their 7/10th income tax and street fund.
