Sergio Garcia has been appointed to design a new championship golf course at the Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club in Bahrain.

The 45-year-old Spaniard, who is currently competing on the LIV Golf circuit, signed the deal on the new project in person before making the short trip over to Saudi Arabia to play in LIV Golf’s opening event in Riyadh.

The new 18-hole course will be built at the Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club’s existing site at Al Raffa, which is just a few miles west of Royal Golf Club, host venue for the DP World Tour’s Bahrain Championship, which took place earlier this month.

Yusuf Osama Buheji, CEO of Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club, said that the initiative ‘aligns with efforts to diversify development projects at the club, transforming it into a premier destination while supporting the sports and tourism sectors and attracting investment to advance Bahrain’s economic growth’.

As well as creating the design masterplan, Garcia will also serve as a brand ambassador for the new course, which is being developed in partnership with real estate company Bareeq Al Reta.

Garcia’s current portfolio of design projects includes the construction of a second course at Terras da Comporta in Portugal, which is due to open in June, and a new course at Mayakoba Country Club in Mexico.
