Santa Fe County residents share thoughts on proposed infrastructure projects

SANTA FE COUNTY, N.M. – Earlier this week, the Santa Fe County Commissioners Board discussed what infrastructure projects should appear on the November ballot for county residents. In just a few months, county residents will decide which of those projects will move forward.

Some of those proposed projects include trail expansion, improvements to a local park, and some road construction. County residents shared their thoughts on those projects on Saturday afternoon.

“We need to do a lot of improvements on our existing trails, our existing parks, our existing roadways,” said Floyd Silva, a resident of Santa Fe County. Another resident mentioned the lack of parking at local trails.

Though improvements to trail parking are not on the proposed list, some trail expansion is, such as designing and constructing the continuation of the Greenway Trail.

“Anything that’s going to benefit the people that are from here,” Silva said.

Some other proposed projects include constructing a multi-sport field at Romero Park, adding lighting, more pickleball courts, and a water splash pad for kids. They’re also proposing to make improvements to some county roads as well.

“You just have to drive around and see what shambles they’re in,” Silva said about roads in the county. “I mean, there’s potholes all over the place.”

“They need a lot more improvement,” said Glenna Bushe, another Santa Fe County Resident. “I know they have been working on them over the years, but there’s certain areas that’s really bad that they need to look at in the county and in town.”

The county would also like to expand its water reclamation facility to meet demand in the area- by increasing how much dirty water the county can clean and distribute.

“I feel like if there’s improvements that can be made on water. I’m always about that,” explained Zenith Bhurtel, who lives in the county.

The Santa Fe County Commissioners Board is expected to finalize a list of proposed projects during their August 13 meeting.
