SANDAG to fund $45M in grants for public infrastructure projects

Must read

The San Diego Association of Governments will fund up to $45 million in public infrastructure projects under the latest round of its Smart Growth Incentive Program.

SANDAG’s Transportation Committee unanimously approved the program’s evaluation criteria during a meeting last month, taking the next step in making the funding available to jurisdictions across the county. The agency’s full Board of Directors has ultimate approval.

The program will fund projects that focus on climate action plans, planning and capital improvements.

Some 70 projects within the region have been funded by the program in previous years, such as streetscaping along Chula Vista’s Third Avenue, the Lemon Grove trolley plaza and signage in downtown San Diego.

Funding comes from the county’s TransNet sales tax.

Officials said they expect projects funded by this round of grants to be completed by 2029.

This brief came from reporting by Josh Frojelin, a San Diego Documenter, at a SANDAG Transportation Committee meeting last month. The Documenters program trains and pays community members to document what happens at public meetings. It’s run by inewsource, a nonpartisan nonprofit newsroom dedicated to investigative and accountability journalism. Read more about the program here.
